◉ Project Origins

"Wind Rises Over Nanshan" is a large-scale immersive sound, dance and poetry drama integrating music, dance, poetry recitation and cutting-edge stage technology. Aiming to break the flat narrative of traditional stages, the project builds a multi-layered, dynamically transformable three-dimensional performance space to realize a modernized and dramatized visual translation of Nanshan’s cultural heritage and natural imagery. Our core task was to create a mechanical dynamic lighting system that can "breathe and grow" for the production, enabling lighting and lifting structures to become performers in their own right rather than mere backdrops.

◉ Project Challenges

Balancing Heritage with Modernity

Ultimate Balance Between Structural Safety and Dynamic Precision:

Within the limited stage space, 48 lifting hosts (including 6 heavy-duty 60kg units) were densely deployed to carry 72 large light curtain discs for complex synchronous or asynchronous movements. Even minor asynchrony or jitter would be visually amplified and pose threats to the safety of aerial performers.

In-depth Integration & Unified Narrative of Multiple Systems:

The mechanical lifting system, high-brightness lasers, holographic screen imaging and conventional stage lighting needed seamless integration, all driven by a unified timecode system. This ensured every mechanical movement and light beam synchronized with the rhythm and emotional beats of music and dance at the millisecond level.

Accurate Realization of Artistic Effects:

Abstract poetic concepts such as "Nanshan Clouds & Mist", "Vegetation Growth" and "Time-Space Travel" required conversion into specific, programmable equipment motion trajectories and optical combinations, placing extremely high demands on creative programming capabilities.

We designed a three-tier "Central Nerve - Dynamic Skeleton - Visual Texture" solution:

Central Nerve (Intelligent Control System)

A large-scale networked lighting console served as the central command, synchronously controlling all lifting hosts, lasers and holographic fans via Art-Net/timecode protocol. All equipment movements were pre-programmed into a sequence of cue points closely integrated with the performance music.

Dynamic Skeleton (Lifting System Architecture)

6 heavy-duty 9m 60kg lifting hosts formed the core power axis at the rear of the stage, undertaking the heavy collective lifting of main light curtain discs to create the magnificent momentum of undulating mountains.
36 standard 9m lifting hosts and 6 6m lifting hosts formed medium and close-view layers in the front and side areas, executing faster, more agile independent or grouped movements to simulate flowing clouds/mist and swaying plants.

Visual Texture (Special Effects & Imaging Layer)

72 9m lifting light curtain discs continuously adjusted angles and positions during lifting, combining with projection to form a dynamic screen canvas transitioning from solid to virtual and flat to three-dimensional.
6 high-power lasers penetrated the screens from different angles, outlining highly penetrating beam lines and patterns.
18 holographic fans alternated with physical lifting structures in specific scenes, achieving the elusive effect of real performers dancing alongside illusions.

Where Technology Meets Art

Redundant Safety Design:

All lifting hosts were equipped with dual-encoder closed-loop feedback and mechanical hard limits; the control system adopted dual-machine hot backup to ensure absolute reliability.

Dynamic Load Calculation:

The software real-time calculated and displayed load changes of each lifting group, providing early warnings for unbalanced conditions.

Laser-Medium Interaction:

A customized algorithm automatically adjusted laser power and focus when penetrating moving screens, ensuring consistently sharp imagery and avoiding defocus caused by medium shaking.

Virtual Preview:

Prior to construction, full 3D modeling and dynamic simulation of all equipment were completed in professional software such as MA3D to accurately predict all motion trajectories and potential interferences.

Phased Installation & Calibration:

First completed structural installation and load testing of all heavy-duty hosts, then mounted light curtain discs for static balance calibration, and finally connected to the control system for dynamic synchronization debugging.

Full-Process Integrated Rehearsals:

Conducted over 10 rounds of costumed full rehearsals with directors, stage designers and music teams. The trigger timing, movement speed and light intensity of each cue point were continuously fine-tuned until fully integrated with the performance.

The performance achieved resounding success, with the mechanical lighting system hailed by the media as "the fifth dimension of the stage". In key scenes, 72 light curtain discs rose slowly like a forest sea, while lasers pierced through like morning sunlight; combined with holographic images, they perfectly visualized the conception of "Wind stirs at the tip of duckweed, dances atop Nanshan’s peaks". The system delivered:

Creation of 15 distinct stage space dimension transformations.
Established the production as a benchmark cultural-tourism integration project locally, with plans for national tours.
