Project Background

Hins Cheung's "The Next 20" concert series at the Hong Kong Coliseum was a celebration of his two-decade-long career, demanding a stage design that reflected both nostalgic intimacy and grand, theatrical spectacle. The creative vision required a transformative visual centerpiece capable of creating "wow" moments that would resonate emotionally with the audience. Our suspended kinetic performance spheres were selected as the signature scenic element, tasked with evolving from elegant atmospheric fixtures into dynamic, interactive performers that would define key segments of the show, symbolizing themes of ascension, reflection, and celestial connection.

Pushing Technological Boundaries

Precision Timing for Dramatic Impact:
The spheres' movements needed to be perfectly synchronized with specific lyrical cues and musical crescendos to maximize dramatic effect, requiring frame-accurate programming and flawless integration with the show's timecode.
Safe Operation in a Dynamic Performance Space:
With performers and dancers potentially interacting in the vicinity below, the system demanded absolute mechanical reliability and multiple redundant safety protocols to eliminate any risk of uncontrolled descent or cable failure during live shows.
Versatile Visual Roles:
The spheres had to serve multiple functions: as static, glowing orbs creating ambiance; as a slowly descending constellation; and as rapidly moving, choreographed kinetic sculptures. This required versatile programming and robust hardware capable of smooth, silent operation across a wide range of speeds.

We deployed a fleet of large-diameter, internally illuminated kinetic spheres, each suspended on its own independent high-speed hoist system.

Integrated Visual System:

      • The spheres' internal LED systems were controlled via the same network (Art-Net) as the stage lighting, allowing their color, intensity, and effects (pulsing, strobing, gradient sweeps) to be seamlessly integrated into the overall visual landscape of each song.

      • We designed a custom, lightweight truss cage and quick-lock connector system for each sphere, allowing the entire array to be flown as a single pre-assembled module, drastically reducing daily rigging time.

       

Multi-Layer Safety Architecture:

    • Each hoist featured dual electromagnetic brakes, real-time load monitoring, and independent limit switches. The control system included a dedicated safety PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) that monitored all parameters and would execute a controlled, safe stop in any fault scenario.

Cue-Based Kinetic Choreography:

    • Each sphere was programmed as an individual "performer" within the lighting console (grandMA3). Complex group movements—such as spirals, waves, and sudden collective drops—were built into the show's cue list, triggered in perfect sync with the music and lighting.

  • Specially engineered hoists provided rapid acceleration and deceleration for dynamic movements while maintaining positional accuracy within ±5mm, essential for creating tight geometric formations.

High-Output, Uniform Illumination:

  • The spheres utilized a diffuse, double-layer fabric with interior high-density LED arrays, producing a perfectly even, bright glow suitable for television broadcast without hot spots.

Silent Operation:

  • Critical for ballads and spoken segments, all motors and drives were selected and tuned for whisper-quiet performance.

      1. A rigorous pre-show checklist was established, including a full-range test movement and brake function verification for every sphere before each performance.

      2. Our kinetic programmer remained on-site throughout the technical rehearsal period and initial shows to make real-time adjustments and ensure perfect integration.

All kinetic and lighting cues for the spheres were pre-programmed offline based on the show's audio track and then fine-tuned during technical rehearsals with the director.
