Zhang Jie’s Chengdu Concert
The Jason Zhang "Over the Starlight" concert
◉ Project Background
The Jason Zhang "Over the Starlight" concert at Chengdu's large-scale stadium was a monumental production designed to match the artist's powerful vocals and stadium-filling energy with a visual spectacle of corresponding scale and emotional depth. The creative directive called for transforming the entire stadium atmosphere into a participatory, celestial experience. We were tasked with realizing this vision through a mega-scale kinetic installation of 756 sets of our Kinetic Mini Ball systems. This fleet was not merely decorative; it was conceived as a singular, intelligent entity—a "kinetic sky"—capable of executing everything from delicate, emotional sequences synchronized with ballads to explosive, rhythmic spectacles during anthems, directly engaging tens of thousands of attendees.
◉ Project Challenges
Pushing Technological Boundaries
◉ Solution
We engineered a centralized, hierarchical control system tailored for mega-scale kinetic orchestration.
Centralized "Swarm Intelligence" Control Hub:
-
All 756 Kinetic Mini Balls were managed by a master control system running on a redundant server setup. Movement and lighting data were distributed via a high-speed, redundant fiber-optic network to regional controllers, ensuring frame-accurate, sub-10ms synchronization across the entire array.
-
Each unit featured a triple-redundant safety system: primary and secondary electromagnetic brakes, plus a mechanical hard-lock. All electronics were housed in IP65-rated enclosures. A real-time wind speed monitoring system was integrated; if thresholds were exceeded, the system would automatically smooth and slow all movements, transitioning to a stable, high-wind mode.
"Macro-Micro" Programming Architecture:
-
We developed a dual-layer programming approach. The "Macro" layer handled stadium-wide wave patterns, pulsations, and geometric formations. The "Micro" layer controlled algorithmically generated, non-repeating behaviors within smaller clusters (e.g., simulated gentle, random twinkling), creating emotional texture and depth that read clearly from afar.
Modular, Pre-Rigged "Celestial Grid" Deployment:
-
The 756 balls were pre-installed and pre-tested on custom, lightweight truss modules in our factory. Each module, containing a manageable cluster (e.g., 36 balls), was a self-contained unit with pre-run cables. On-site, these modules were flown into position and connected via robust, quick-lock data and power connectors, reducing complex wiring to simple grid assembly.
◉ Technical Highlights
Groundbreaking Industry Innovations
High-Intensity, Uniform LED Illumination:
Each ball housed a high-density, diffused LED array producing exceptionally even and bright output, visible even under partial stadium lighting, with full RGBW color mixing.
Silent High-Torque Motors:
Specially engineered motors provided the power for dynamic movement while operating at noise levels inaudible over crowd ambiance, critical for televised quiet moments.
Real-Time System Health Dashboard:
A comprehensive monitoring interface provided live data on every motor's status, load, temperature, and network connectivity, enabling proactive management.
◉ Implementation
01. Pre-Visualization and Offline Programming:
-
The entire 3-hour show was pre-programmed in a virtual replica of the stadium. Every kinetic sequence was signed off by the creative director before any hardware left our facility.
-
Installation followed a military-precision plan: primary rigging points first, then flying and interconnecting the pre-built modules in sequential zones, followed by a systematic power-up and network addressing process.
02. Automated Spatial Calibration:
-
Using LiDAR scanning after installation, the precise 3D location of each ball was captured. Control software automatically calibrated all movement profiles to this real-world map, ensuring programmed shapes manifested perfectly in the actual space.
03. Integrated Technical Rehearsals:
-
We conducted extensive rehearsals with Jason Zhang and the band, fine-tuning cues to match the artist's live energy and stage positions, and ensuring flawless integration with pyro, lasers, and video content.
◉ Project Outcomes
The Kinetic Mini Ball system became the defining visual signature of the "Over the Starlight" tour, achieving spectacular artistic and technical success.
-
It created viral, iconic moments, such as transforming the stadium into a swirling galaxy or a pulsating heart of light, which dominated social media coverage and fan reactions.
◉ Lasting Impact
Diffusion of Technological Innovation
-
Tour-Wide Health Monitoring & Support: Provision of remote, real-time system diagnostics and 24/7 technical support for the duration of the tour's subsequent stops.
-
Preventive Maintenance Schedule & Spare Parts Kit: Delivery of a customized maintenance plan and a dedicated kit of critical spare parts to the touring crew, minimizing downtime risk.
-
Creative Content Archival and Adaptation: Full archiving of all programming for future reference, and services to adapt the content for potential one-off festival appearances or future tour legs.
◉ Project Insight
-
Scale Requires Centralized Intelligence: Success at this scale (756+ units) is impossible with distributed, ad-hoc control. A robust, master-planned central nervous system is essential.
-
Safety Engineering Enables Creative Freedom: The investment in multi-redundant safety and environmental hardening is what allowed the creative team to design daring, immersive sequences with total confidence.
-
Modularity is the Key to Feasibility: Complex mega-installations are only logistically and economically viable through a philosophy of extreme pre-fabrication and modular design.
-
Emotion Transcends Scale: Even in a stadium of 40,000 people, technology must serve emotion. The programming must craft intimate moments that make the massive space feel personal.
◉ Conclusion
The Jason Zhang Chengdu stadium project stands as a definitive case study in the design, deployment, and masterful control of mega-scale kinetic lighting systems for premier stadium touring. We demonstrated not only our capacity to manufacture and supply high-quality hardware at volume but, more importantly, our unparalleled expertise in integrating these components into a reliable, intelligent, and artistically profound total system. This project proves our capability to be the lead technical partner for the most ambitious live entertainment productions in the world, solidifying our position at the forefront of large-format kinetic experience design.
