The 3rd TMEA Tencent Music Entertainment Festival
The 3rd TMEA Tencent Music Entertainment Festival
◉ Project Background
The 3rd Tencent Music Entertainment Awards (TMEA) was a flagship annual music spectacle, designed as a cross-platform celebration of the year's top artists and songs across pop, hip-hop, rock, and electronic genres. Broadcast live to millions of viewers, it required a stage capable of instant visual reinvention to match the unique identity of over twenty performing acts within a single, fast-paced ceremony. Our mandate was to deliver a kinetic system that combined atmospheric grandeur with rhythmic precision. We engineered a hybrid solution of 60 kinetic meteor tubes and 40 kinetic mini balls, creating a versatile 100-unit "kinetic canvas" that served as both a transformative scenic backdrop and a dynamic rhythmic instrument, adapting seamlessly to each performer's style.
◉ Project Challenges
Pushing Technological Boundaries
◉ Solution
An Innovation-Driven Technical Framework
Functional Layering:
Our strategy was to assign distinct narrative and rhythmic roles to each fixture type, unified by intelligent central control.
-
-
Arranged in geometric blocks, these 60 fixtures handled macro-environment changes. They executed broad, sweeping gestures—slow waves, dramatic collective lifts, and scenic reveals—to define the overarching mood and spatial feel for each song.
-
The 40 balls, deployed at varied heights, acted as the detailed rhythmic layer. They performed faster, punctuated movements—tight clusters, sparkling twinkles, and rapid directional "hits"—that tracked directly with melodic lines and drum patterns, adding tactile energy.
-
"Show-Speed" Cue Architecture:
-
We built a comprehensive, cue-based show file on a primary lighting console. Each artist's segment had a dedicated cue list, enabling the lighting director to jump instantly from one act's finale to the next act's preset look, facilitating the breakneck pace of the awards show.
Genre-Specific Motion Libraries:
-
In pre-production, we developed libraries of pre-programmed movement behaviors categorized by music genre (e.g., "Epic Ballad," "EDM Build," "Hip-Hop Swagger"). This allowed for rapid customization during programming, ensuring visual authenticity for each performance style while maximizing efficiency.
◉ Technical Highlights
Groundbreaking Industry Innovations
Unified High-Speed Control Network:
-
Both fixture types were integrated into a single, timecode-synchronized control network (Art-Net/sACN), guaranteeing frame-accurate synchronization between their differing mechanical actions and LED responses.
Contrast-Based Movement Design:
-
The programming capitalized on the inherent contrast between the tubes' graceful, linear paths and the balls' agile, point-light precision, creating a more complex and visually rich field than a homogeneous system could achieve.
Broadcast-Silent Drive Systems:
-
All hoists and motors were equipped with specialized dampening and low-noise components, ensuring all kinetic activity was visually dramatic but sonically invisible to microphones.
◉ Implementation
01. Pre-Visualization & Preset Development:
-
Prior to load-in, the stage and kinetic sequences were fully modeled in 3D software. The genre-based motion libraries were created and tested in this virtual environment.
-
Our programmer worked alongside the show's Lighting Director during allocated rehearsal blocks, using the pre-built libraries as a foundation to craft and fine-tune custom looks for each artist.
02. Phased System Integration & Testing:
-
After installation, testing followed a strict sequence: individual fixture verification, full group synchronization checks, and finally, integration with the main stage lighting, video content, and audio timecode.
03. Live Event Support:
-
A dedicated technician remained at the front-of-house control position throughout the live broadcast to monitor system health and assist with any real-time adjustments requested by the production team.
◉ Project Outcomes
Reshaping Live Entertainment Standards
'The hybrid kinetic system was a defining success of the 3rd TMEA broadcast.
◉ Lasting Impact
Diffusion of Technological Innovation
-
Complete Show File Archive: All programming data, cue lists, and fixture profiles were professionally archived and delivered to TMEA's production team for future reference or potential reuse.
-
Post-Event Performance Review: We provided a detailed debrief report covering system performance metrics, maintenance observations from the intense use, and creative-technical recommendations for future events.
-
Priority Technical Support Pathway: Established a direct line of communication for any follow-up technical inquiries related to the system's deployment in potential touring spin-offs or future Tencent Music events.
◉ Project Insight
-
Hybrid Systems Multiply Creative Potential: Strategically combining different kinetic fixture types is a force multiplier for mid-scale budgets, offering greater narrative range and visual texture than a larger array of a single fixture type.
-
Efficiency in Workflow is a Critical Deliverable: For fast-paced, multi-act shows, the investment in an organized, cue-based control structure and reusable preset libraries is essential. It transforms time pressure from a constraint into a manageable workflow.
-
Design for Contrast, Not Just Quantity: Achieving "big look" impact with a strategic fixture count relies on intelligent design that leverages contrast in scale, motion type, and visual role between system components.
-
Broadcast Demands Invisible Engineering Excellence: The ultimate success metric for a broadcast kinetic system is its silence and flawless reliability. This unseen engineering is the essential foundation that allows artistic creativity to shine without distraction.
◉ Conclusion
The 3rd TMEA project stands as a benchmark for delivering sophisticated, broadcast-ready hybrid kinetic solutions for premier, multi-act music spectacles. By strategically deploying and masterfully integrating 60 meteor tubes and 40 mini balls, we provided a versatile, high-impact visual engine that met the extreme demands of a live awards show. This project underscores our evolution from equipment suppliers to providers of intelligent, workflow-optimized production solutions. It serves as a powerful case study for music awards, television specials, and festivals worldwide, demonstrating that targeted, intelligent kinetic design delivers maximum creative versatility and operational reliability for the most visible stages in the music industry.
