As a benchmark annual gala among domestic TV platforms, Jiangsu TV's New Year's Eve Gala adheres to the production standard of a "top-tier Asian show" and places particular emphasis on creating spectacular scenes beyond audience expectations through cutting-edge visual technology. This year's gala aims to build a visual theme centered on the "starry universe", making the stage itself the main body of narration. We undertook the design and implementation of the gala's core dynamic visual system and deployed a total of 692 sets of lifting meteor light tubes. Its core mission is to construct a programmable, interactive, and vibrant dynamic art installation on the physical stage through this large-scale and precise "array of light", depicting the grand narrative from the birth of the galaxy to the celebration of civilization.

Project Challenges

Balancing Heritage with Modernity

Absolute synchronization and precise shaping of the epic-scale array:
Controlling 692 independent lifting units to form uniform and complex patterns such as waves, spirals, and blooms requires the system to have nanosecond-level synchronization precision. Any slight delay or misalignment will be infinitely magnified under TV close-up shots, undermining the overall beauty and momentum.
Extreme environmental challenges of outdoor live broadcast:
Held in an open-air large stadium at the end of December, the system must face severe challenges of low temperature, strong winds, and potential moisture. All electrical and mechanical components must start, stop stably and operate for a long time below zero degrees Celsius, and the dynamic structure must resist the impact of gusts to ensure precise movement trajectories and safety.
Rigorous standards of radio and television-level production:
As a Grade-S project broadcast live to hundreds of millions of viewers, absolute "zero errors" are required. The system must be equipped with full-link redundant backup (control, power supply, signal), and the equipment operation must be completely silent to avoid interfering with on-site sound recording. Meanwhile, the light color consistency and uniformity of the lights must meet the harsh requirements of 4K/8K HDR ultra-high-definition live broadcast.

Distributed high-precision synchronization network:

  • Adopting an architecture of "master clock + fiber optic ring network", 692 sets of lights are divided into multiple synchronization domains. The central server uniformly distributes time codes and motion commands, ensuring that the global motion delay is less than 5 milliseconds and achieving pixel-level array consistency.
  • All lifting hosts use wide-temperature components and IP65 protection, and the cables are made of cold-resistant and flexible materials. To cope with strong winds, we developed a dynamic wind resistance algorithm. When the wind speed sensor data exceeds the standard, the system automatically and smoothly reduces the movement speed and switches to a wind-resistant mode to ensure safety.

Radio and television-level full redundancy architecture:

  • From the console, server, network switch to the power cabinet, all achieve 1:1 hot backup and are equipped with automatic switching devices. It adopts broadcast-grade high-color-rendering LED light sources combined with uniform light mixing technology, and through a real-time color calibration system, ensures that the color temperature and color of each light tube are completely consistent at any brightness.

Prefabricated and visual workflow:

  • All light movements are pre-programmed and 3D simulated on professional previsualization platforms such as Disguise in advance. On-site, a "pre-fabricated hanging point frame" scheme is adopted, where dozens of sets of lights and their cables are pre-installed on custom trusses to realize overall hoisting and one-click power-on commissioning, reducing the traditional installation time by 70%.

High dynamic mechanical performance:

  1. The lifting system has excellent acceleration capability, enabling quiet floating from 0.1 meters per second to thunderous descending at 2.5 meters per second, with a wide dynamic range.
